Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is the BAC estimate?
SafeRide IQ's BAC estimates are statistical approximations based on the Widmark pharmacokinetic formula combined with behavioral test performance. Individual results vary widely depending on metabolism, food, medications, hydration, body composition, and many other factors. The app is an advisory tool, not a breathalyzer. Never use it as the sole basis for deciding to drive.
What data does the app collect?
SafeRide IQ runs entirely on your device. We do not have user accounts, servers, or analytics. Test results, profile information, and emergency contacts stay on your iPhone. Camera, microphone, and motion sensor data are processed in real time during tests and immediately discarded — nothing is recorded.
For full details, see our Privacy Policy.
Why did the app say "Impairment Indicated" when I felt fine?
SafeRide IQ uses several signals: HGN eye tracking, balance, speech, finger coordination, and your self-reported drink data. If your self-reported drinks suggest a BAC of 0.05% or higher, the app flags impairment even if individual tests pass — because research shows driving impairment begins around 0.05%, and tests can be passed by experienced drinkers who are still impaired.
Feeling fine is not the same as being safe to drive. When in doubt, don't drive.
Why did the app say "No Impairment" when I'm clearly drunk?
The app can produce false negatives. Common reasons:
- You under-reported your drinks (very common — actual pours are often larger than 1.5–2 oz)
- You entered the wrong drink type or strength
- You compensated during the tests (slow careful movements, focused effort)
- The HGN test had calibration issues from poor lighting or device positioning
Trust your judgment, not the app. If you feel impaired, you are impaired. Do not drive.
Does the app work offline?
Yes. The entire app runs on your device — including all sensor processing, BAC math, and test scoring. The only time it needs internet is when you tap a ride-share button to open Uber, Lyft, Curb, or Waymo.
Which iPhone models are supported?
SafeRide IQ requires iOS 17 or later and a device with a TrueDepth front camera (iPhone X and newer). The HGN eye-tracking test relies on ARKit's face tracking, which needs TrueDepth.
How do I delete my data?
Open the app, tap the gear icon in the top-right of the Home screen, then tap Clear All Data. This permanently deletes your profile, test history, and all preferences from your device. You can also uninstall the app entirely — since we have no servers, no copy of your data exists anywhere else.
Can the app's results be used in court?
No. SafeRide IQ is not a medical device or evidentiary instrument. Its results are not admissible as proof of intoxication or sobriety in any legal proceeding. The app is for personal wellness use only.
Is SafeRide IQ affiliated with law enforcement or the government?
No. SafeRide IQ is an independent advisory wellness tool. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or approved by any government agency, law enforcement organization, medical body, or testing standards organization, including the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
